It starts with a quick phone call — we'll have a chat about your goals and I'll let you know how I can help. If it sounds like a good fit, I'll set up a free 30-minute intro session with the student so I can build a rapport, identify key areas to work on, and put a plan together. I believe completely in offering these sessions with no commitment. Navigating all the options for support in an unfamiliar area can be quite overwhelming, and even if we don't go ahead with regular sessions, I'm happy to provide any guidance that I can.

Lessons are £70 to £120 an hour — £70 with one of my hand-picked tutors, or £120 with me. Our introductory sessions are always free, and you could do one of those with more than one of your potential tutors, so you can see if it's the right fit. Even once you start, there's no ongoing commitment. We only continue so long as it's working for everyone.

Whatever's best for the student (and the parent). Working one to one relies heavily on a good rapport and connection, so when you get in touch, I'll learn a little about where they're at and either recommend that I take them on myself (£120/hr) or match them with one of my recommended tutors (£70/hr).

I recommend once a week. Ultimately, the student has to go away and get their practice done — but a weekly check-in clears obstacles, provides structure, and keeps motivation high. For exam preparation, some students benefit from a short burst of more intensive sessions. In cases where fitting it into the school week feels impossible, we can do blocks during holidays too, with either group sessions or one to one.

Just a laptop (or tablet) and pen and paper. I provide everything else — all the digital tools, resources, and lesson materials are on my end. Students join a video call and follow along on screen while working through problems on paper alongside me.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and a PGCE in Secondary Education, with over 15 years of teaching experience. I've taught in state schools, selective boarding schools including Christ's Hospital, and international schools, and I served as headteacher of the World Class Academy. Along the way I've developed some strong ideas about what's effective in both a classroom setting and one to one, and basically believe that we all thrive with encouragement, support, and just the right amount of pressure at any given time.

I work almost exclusively online. Lessons take place over a video call using a professional setup — including a graphics tablet for handwritten working, an on-screen notepad, interactive geometry software, and calculator emulators. I don't love the idea of the whole world moving online, but for one to one tuition I've found that it allows us to focus on the most important parts of the job, and offers some benefits to the student in that it's more flexible, and a bit less intense, especially at the start. We work hard to build rapport despite the distance, and find that for most of our students it's a great option. In the rare situation that it becomes clear that it's not the right fit, we'll flag it to the parent early, rather than waste the student's time.

We wouldn't do it it wasn't effective, but of course some of our considerations are practical too. Ultimately, working online makes full time tutoring a viable business, when otherwise it might not be. On a personal level, tutoring online is not so easily satisfying; it takes a conscious effort to build rapport and stay in touch with parents, without the contact that comes from meeting in person. For the student, the benefits include no travel time, easier to schedule around school and activities, and the comfort and familiarity of learning from home, without the pressure of someone watching every pen stroke. I use professional digital tools including interactive graphing software, a digital whiteboard, and calculator emulators, so lessons are just as visual and hands-on as being in the same room.

I tutor from Key Stage 3 right through to A-Level and Further Maths. I also work with adult learners on Functional Skills and numeracy qualifications, and I teach a range of personal finance and financial literacy qualifications — including Young Enterprise FEQs, AQA PSE Financial Skills, LIBF PFQs, Duke of Edinburgh financial modules, and IFS certificates. Absolutely. We have to be careful not to confuse more significant gaps with "just exam practice", but for students with a solid foundation, dedicated exam preparation can be really useful. I typically recommend a 12-week programme of focused preparation — covering revision strategies, targeted practice, and key topics. Many of my students improved by at least 2 grades in 2025/26, and a structured approach to exam prep makes a real difference to both results and confidence.

One of the main reasons I enjoy tutoring is the chance to change that belief. Many of my students started out feeling anxious or convinced they just weren't a "maths person", but you'd be amazed how far you can go with the right support and a bit of encouragement. The best thing about working one-on-one is that students come away with a much greater sense of independence, and the confidence that they could learn almost anything in the right environment.
