I can't recommend Ben enough, he is a fantastic teacher, both academically and as a sports coach. I have known Ben for a long time and he helped me through my A-Level maths exams and coursework and has since then taught me kitesurf, snowboard and rock climb. He is extremely patient, and thorough, and has a way of explaining difficult things very simply, both in speaking but also demonstrating. Not only is he great at 1on1 teaching but also excellent in a group setting. Can't recommend him enough! Thank you Ben!

About Your Maths Tutor

I haven't always loved teaching - when I first started I couldn't have imagined a harder job. I started teaching in 2008 as a classroom teacher in a very typical school in Peterborough, UK, and found it pretty tough. I remember thinking there aren't many jobs where your first day at work might quite closely match your last, and it was a steep learning curve (for me at least). That first year really shaped my values around education, and I've since made an effort to work at a whole range of schools, in a whole range of roles.

Over the years I've taught in all kinds of educational settings, including state schools, private schools, and international schools, working with students of all backgrounds, including those with SEN needs such as ADHD, dyscalculia, and autism, as well as home-educated learners. I've prepared students for 11+, 13+, GCSE, A-Level, and IB examinations, and on occasion the American SAT too.

I've been fortunate to work at some remarkable schools, including Christ's Hospital, one of the UK's leading boarding schools, and the World Class Academy, an American high school for aspiring kiteboarding athletes with a programme of international travel, academics and athletics — where I served as headteacher.

Now based in Exeter, Devon, I'm lucky enough to be able to spend my time teaching and coaching in more or less exactly the ways I've always wanted to, and to support students and teachers across the UK in navigating maths, and school and the classroom too.

When I'm not teaching, you'll probably find me climbing, paragliding, or kitesurfing.

About Me

I'm a dedicated maths tutor with a background in education leadership, having previously been Headteacher of the World Class Academy — an international school for young kiteboarding athletes. Now tutoring full-time, I help students of all abilities build both the skills and confidence they need to succeed in maths.

I work with learners from Key Stage 3 to A-Level, tailoring lessons to their goals. My teaching is structured but encouraging, because progress in maths comes not just from practice but from believing you can do it.

With the right support, every student can make real progress — and the confidence they gain goes far beyond the classroom.

Why parents & students choose me

I often get the impression (from teachers and parents alike) that everyone thinks learning maths is complicated. I don't think that's quite true; maths might be complicated but learning it as simple as learning anything else, and just about as hard. One of the big mistakes we make is thinking that once we understand something in the classroom, we'll be able to do it again in 3 months time. In that sense I think students do themselves a disservice, and I often ask: If you were learning a language, would you be expect to be able to hold a converastion just because you were told once what the words mean? Achieving fluency in maths takes just as much practice as it would in French, Spanish or Mandarin.

With that in mind, I've come to the belief that what most students need is clear structure, encouragement, and help to do more practice than they really want to do (especially at the start). Fortunately, for most of us motivation comes from our successes, and a good tutor will make sure a student has the chance to have many of those. Many of my students improved by at least 2 grades in 2024/25 — and it's rare that I'd aim for less. Even students who have hated maths for years, find that they come to enjoy it once they see their progress, and that's my favourite part of the job.

I'm sure every tutor is different, but I know many fall into the trap of thinking the best way to practice for exams is to do exam practice. I can see the logic, and in the few months prior to the exam that's often a great way to prepare, but in my experience what most students need is to master each concept before moving on to the next. Very often, exam practice takes place too early, and students can't access the benefits.

When working one to one, my students follow a structured plan which encourages and enables independent practice, building deeper understanding topic by topic. I try to make sure my lessons are warm and encouraging, and I use professional digital tools that make concepts clear. I rarely send detailed topic notes from sessions because far better ones are available online.

Ultimately, there's no substitute for practice, and it's my job to help the student to ensure they're doing the right amount, of the right type.

Parents are an important part of this process too, which is why I send notes out after each session.

The tools behind every lesson

Every session is powered by professional-grade digital tools — no blurry screen shares or static PDFs.

Interactive graphing software used during online maths tutoring sessions

Graphing & Geometry

I use a handful of excellent online tools to support learning, where appropriate. Desmos and GeoGebra allow us to plot graphs and illustrate the rules of geometry in ways that you can't do on pen and paper. I encourage students to use these tools in their own practice too!

Personalised lesson planning dashboard showing student progress tracking

Planning & Tracking

Every student has a personalised plan. I take a strategic approach to make sure I'm working on the areas that are going to pay off best and fastest. My goal is to quickly restore a student's ability to make the most of their classes at school, and then to provide the support and encourage the practice that keeps them on track.

Digital whiteboard and calculator emulator used in online maths lessons

Digital Whiteboard

An on-screen notepad, textbooks, notes and calculator emulator make sure I can share everything needed, even online.

Frequently asked questions about maths tutoring

It starts with a quick phone call — we'll have a chat about your goals and I'll let you know how I can help. If it sounds like a good fit, I'll set up a free 30-minute intro session with the student so I can build a rapport, identify key areas to work on, and put a plan together. No commitment, no pressure.

Lessons are £70/hour for GCSE and £80/hour for A-Level. The free intro session is exactly that — free — so you can see if it's the right fit before committing to anything.

I recommend once a week. Ultimately, the student has to go away and get their practice done — but a weekly check-in clears obstacles, provides structure, and keeps motivation high. For exam preparation, some students benefit from a short burst of more intensive sessions.

Just a laptop (or tablet) and pen and paper. I provide everything else — all the digital tools, resources, and lesson materials are on my end. Students join a video call and follow along on screen while working through problems on paper alongside me.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and a PGCE in Secondary Education, with over 15 years of teaching experience. I've taught in state schools, selective boarding schools including Christ's Hospital, and international schools, and I served as headteacher of the World Class Academy. This breadth of experience means I can adapt my approach to suit any learning style.

I work almost exclusively online. Lessons take place over a video call using a professional setup — including a graphics tablet for handwritten working, an on-screen notepad, interactive geometry software, and calculator emulators. Students find the experience just as engaging as being in the same room, with the added flexibility of learning from home.

Online lessons are more flexible — no travel time, easier to schedule around school and activities, and students can learn from the comfort of home. I use professional digital tools including interactive graphing software, a digital whiteboard, and calculator emulators, so lessons are just as visual and hands-on as being in the same room. Most students actually prefer it once they've tried it.

I tutor from Key Stage 3 right through to A-Level and Further Maths. I also work with adult learners on Functional Skills and numeracy qualifications, and I teach a range of personal finance and financial literacy qualifications — including Young Enterprise FEQs, AQA PSE Financial Skills, LIBF PFQs, Duke of Edinburgh financial modules, and IFS certificates.

Absolutely. I typically recommend a 12-week programme of focused preparation — covering revision strategies, targeted practice, and key topics. Many of my students improved by at least 2 grades in 2024/25, and a structured approach to exam prep makes a real difference to both results and confidence.

One of the main reasons I enjoy tutoring is the chance to change that belief. Many of my students started out feeling anxious or convinced they just weren't a "maths person" — but you'd be amazed how far you can go with the right support and a bit of encouragement. The best thing about working one-on-one is that students come away realising they can learn almost anything when someone takes the time to explain it properly.
